PAIMAN to hand over four ambulances to NWFP dist govts

By Jamila Achakzai

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN) will hand over four ambulances, including two 4x4 ambulances, to the district governments of Nowshera and Dir today.

A PAIMAN spokesperson said the ambulances would be used to improve healthcare, especially child-mother health, in the two NWFP districts.

He said PAIMAN, a USAID-funded project, would hand over ambulances to the district administrations of Nowshera and Dir as part of its ongoing project to upgrade 31 health facilities.

The PAIMAN spokesman said that 90 percent civil works on these facilities had been completed. Some equipment was available at the facilities and the remaining would be supplied within two months.

He said 19 ambulances had been procured for the distribution to health facilities in 10 districts across the country.

The spokesperson said under the five-year programme, PAIMAN had planned to improve the capacity of the existing health system. It also planned to foster a community-based approach to ensure a continuum of care for mothers and newborns. PAIMAN is a consortium led by John Snow Incorporated (JSI) Research and Training Institute and includes the Aga Khan University, Contech International Health Consultants, Greenstar Social Marketing, Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Communication Programmes, Pakistan Voluntary Health and Nutrition Association (PAVHNA), the Population Council and Save the Children.

“The project uses the ‘Pathway to Care and Survival’, developed by JSI’s Mothercare project, to create an environment of increased awareness and inform decision making across all levels of the health systems,” the spokesperson added. Health Secretary Khushnud Lashari would be the chief guest at the handing over ceremony.

Dr Nabeela Ali of JSI-PAIMAN will give an overview of her organisation’s activities and future plans. NWFP health secretary, USAID representative and Upper Dir and Buner nazims and District Coordination Officer (DCO) will also speak on the occasion.
